1999 CDS Highlights

The Insurance Regulatory Examiners Society's 1999 Career Development Seminar, held Aug. 1-3 in Las Vegas, was by far the biggest ever, with nearly 500 registrants attending the two general sessions, the two luncheons and the 31 breakout sessions.

Among the unforgettable moments were the best Insurance Firing Line – aka the Art & Bill show – that anyone could remember. Plus a lively Commissioners Roundtable and for an early-morning pick-me-up, a pickpocket/magician . . . well, you had to be there to appreciate it. If you missed it, ask Nebraska Commissioner Tim Wagner how it went over.

In addition to the fine professional-development programming and all the networking opportunities, the Las Vegas meeting was also the scene of the annual meeting of the IRES Board of Directors. Angela K. Ford, CIE, was elected president of the Society and the presided over her first meeting.

For a complete list of board members, as well as committee chairs, check out this site's About IRES page. You'll also find links on that page allowing you to E-mail your comments or questions directly to members of each board committee.

Speaking of links, if you'd like to volunteer to speak at a future CDS, if you know of someone you'd like to hear – or you simply wish to suggest a topic that needs to be covered in a future meeting – be sure to go back to the main seminar page and click on the button next to one of the seven sections.

Other highlights of the Las Vegas meeting were presentation of the President's Award, which this year was presented to Pete Synnott Jr. by outgoing president Gary W. Meyer, CIE, Colorado . .

. . . the Al Greer Award, which Scott Laird presented to Charlie Elgin (right) . . .

. . . the Schrader-Nelson Publications Award (left), which incoming president Angela Ford presented to William C. Creel, formerly of North Carolina . . .

. . . and presentation of Society members who had earned their prestigious AIE or CIE designations over the previous year.
