Commissioners Roundtable
The future of federal vs. state insurance regulation was only one of the topics discussed Monday morning during the ever-popular Commissioners Roundtable. Panelists included this year's NAIC president, Mike Pickens of Arkansas, plus our host commissioner, Charles R. Cohen, Florida's Kevin McCarty, and Jann Goodpaster of Oregon, sitting in for Sandy Praeger, recently elected Kansas commissioner, who was unable to make it at the last minute. The moderator was once again Bill Bailey.
Use of Third-Party Vendors
The Tuesday morning general session covered a topic of growing interest to regulators whether and how insurers make use of outside vendors to take on core tasks such as claims, utilization review or customer service. Is it a wise business decision or an alarming trend? Should the vendors be licensed? What access should regulators have to their records? Who really benefits from these arrangements? Panelists included consumer gadfly Birny Birnbaum, Don Cleasby of the National Association of Independent Insurers, Don Koch, CIE, of INS Regulatory Insurance Services and Mike Woolbright, CIE, of Missouri, plus moderator Art J. Chartrand.
