Membership

IRES membership is open to anyone who works for or contracts with a state or federal agency that is involved in insurance regulation, including investigators, policy analysts, market conduct examiners, rate analysts, financial examiners, actuaries, attorneys and other professionals.

Other individuals or organizations interested in the Society's goals may join as sustaining members.

The 1,000-plus regulator members of the Society join for a variety of reasons:

  • to belong to a cohesive professional organization that advances the ethical and professional standards of insurance regulation.
  • to interact with their peers during regular meetings and seminars.
  • to receive an informative newsletter, filled with articles and news items of interest to insurance regulators.
  • to advance their careers through attainment of the Society's coveted AIE and CIE designations.
  • to network with – and learn from – their peers at the state level.

Eligibility
Anyone who is employed by or contracting with an insurance regulatory agency is eligible for membership, provided his or her responsibilities include examination, either in the field or in the office, of insurance company products and/or operations. As least 75% of an applicant's professional time must be spent working on behalf of one or more state insurance regulatory agencies. "Retired" status is reserved for former regulators who are no longer working full-time in any capacity, but who wish to retain their membership in IRES and maintain any designations they have attained.

Al Greer Award
Among the many positions and honors available to IRES members is the Al Greer Achievement Award, presented annually to an examiner who not only embodies the dedication, knowledge and tenacity of a professional regulator, but who exceeds those standards. Paul DeAngelo Award
In addition, the IRES Foundation offers the Paul L. DeAngelo Memorial Teaching Award to honor those who have distinguished themselvs in the field of insurance education and training. For more information and nomination forms to go to the Foundation's site.

Dues
Dues for regulator members are $70 a year, $95 for AIEs, $105 for CIEs and $40 for retired members. Accredited members' fees support the Society's mandatory continuing education program.

Sustaining Membership

Regulated insurance companies have a right to expect fair treatment from knowledgeable regulatory personnel – and hence have a direct interest in maintaining strong, professional state-by-state regulation. That's why the Society has a category of nonvoting membership for companies, consultants and other individuals and organizations who want to be involved in IRES activities and be on its mailing list.

They're called "sustaining members" because their dues help sustain and support the important regulatory educational programs sponsored by IRES. For annual dues of $265, sustaining members receive many of the same benefits as regular members, including an informative bimonthly newsletter and member discounts on professional development opportunities – including the Society's annual Market Conduct School.
