Career Development Seminar
IRES's Career Development Seminar is the Society's premier professional development activity, a three-day series of workshops and panels, plus opportunities to interact with peers, usually held in late July or early August. Career Development Sessions
The list of sessions for the '03 meeting is pretty much final, although the exact description and order of the breakouts listed below might still change. Watch this space for updates, and keep an eye on your mailbox for the printed advance program.Commissioners Roundtable
The future of insurance regulation in the 21st century will be only one of the topics discussed Monday morning during the ever-popular Commissioners Roundtable. Panelists will include this year's NAIC president, Mike Pickens of Arkansas, plus our host commissioner, Charles R. Cohen, and other notables to be named later. The moderator will once again be Bill Bailey.
Use of Third-Party Vendors
The Tuesday morning general session will cover a topic of growing interest to regulators whether and how insurers make use of outside vendors to take on core tasks such as claims, utilization review or customer service. Is it a wise business decision or an alarming trend? Should the vendors be licensed? What access should regulators have to their records? Who really benefits from these arrangements?

Market Madness Part II Many states have experienced availability and affordability problems in the property and casualty insurance market. This session looks at what states are doing to make these coverages available and affordable, including a discussion of tier rating and alternate forms of coverage such as fair plans, reciprocals and captives. Medical Malpractice Meltdown Many states are facing serious crises in health care including the increasingly prohibitive cost of malpractice insurance for both doctors and health-care facilities. This session will focus on key reasons, including huge jury awards and lowered returns on investment, and will include a discussion of the search for legislative and other solutions. Next year's Career Development Seminar will be Aug. 15-17 in Denver. Following that, we're scheduled to be in Tampa in '05, Chicago in '06 and Pittsburgh in '07.
Besides CDS, the Insurance Regulatory Examiners Society has other sessions aimed
at encouraging professional development in the critical area of insurance regulation, including a Market Conduct School, aimed at the insurance industry (though open to regulators as well).
